Standard Strollers
Standard strollers are single mid-sized and full-sized strollers. In their simplest form, they provide a seat for your child and somewhere for you to push, but can have many more features depending on the price. There is an abundant selection of this type of stroller on the market, so make sure you know what your needs and wants are before you begin shopping around.
Features
Standard baby strollers come in hundreds of models and each has their own unique features.
Here’s a list of features that are nice to have:
- sturdy and stable frame: plastic (for lots of traveling and use in tricky areas such as stairs and on public transportation) or metal (steel or aluminum, for lots of walking and outdoor use)
- wide wheel base (for more durability and stability)
- good suspension (for doing lots of walking)
- padded seat with strong back support, set low and deep within the frame and with good side and rear protection (bonus: seat that can face either front or back)
- removable, washable fabric
- seatbelt with a 5-point design (goes over shoulders and around the waist) that’s easy to buckle and adjust
- adjustable seat recline (at least 3 positions is good), including full recline for newborns
- padded front arm bar that is adjustable and detachable (for child to hold onto and for holding toys and a snack tray)
- small, front swivel wheels that can lock (for ease of movement in small, crowded areas and on slightly rougher terrain)
- rear brakes (easier if right and left brakes are attached with a bar)
- adjustable-height handlebar (bonus: foam-covered for added comfort)
- easy-to-use folding system (ex: one-hand fold) with safety mechanism to prevent accidental folding with baby in stroller
- parent and child trays (for snacks, drinks, toys, sunglasses, etc.)
- large, easily accessible storage basket (check size and weight limits and accessibility when seat is reclined)
- adjustable, fully retractable canopy (for protection from sun, wind and rain)
- adjustable footrest (for comfort and to keep feet safe from injury)
- storage pockets (for lightweight objects)
It may not be realistic to believe that you will find a stroller that has all the features you want. In order to find the best stroller to fit your needs, it is important to plan ahead and to decide which features you just cannot live without and which would be nice to have if the price is right.
