Double Stroller and Twin Stroller Features

Here’s a list of recommended double stroller and twin stroller features for both tandem and side-by-side models:

  • sturdy and stable frame: metal (steel or aluminum) is preferable to plastic, since double strollers take twice the abuse of single strollers
  • wide wheel base (for more durability and stability)
  • good suspension (for doing lots of walking)
  • padded seats with strong back support, set low and deep within the frame and with good side and rear protection
  • individual, adjustable seat recline (at least 3 positions is good), including full recline for newborns (bonus: for twins, both seats with full recline)
  • removable, washable fabric
  • seatbelts with a 5-point design (goes over shoulders and around the waist) that are easy to buckle and adjust
  • hard nylon wheels (not soft plastic)
  • front swivel wheels that can lock (for ease of movement in small, crowded areas as well as on slightly rougher terrain)
  • rear brakes (easier if right and left brakes are attached with a bar)
  • adjustable-height handlebar (bonus: foam-covered for added comfort)
  • easy-to-use folding system (ex: one-hand fold) with safety mechanism to prevent accidental folding with children in stroller
  • padded front arm bars that are adjustable and detachable (for children to hold onto and for holding toys and a snack tray)
  • parent and child trays (for snacks, drinks, toys, sunglasses, etc.)
  • large, easily accessible storage basket(s) (check size and weight limits and accessibility when seat is reclined)
  • individual, adjustable canopies (for protection from sun, wind and rain)
  • adjustable footrests (for comfort and to keep feet safe from injury)
  • storage pockets (for lightweight objects)

Desirable Double Stroller and Twin Stroller Features Specific to Seating Design

Tandem

  • seats that can face either front or back or each other or a rear seat that sits higher up than the front seat (for a better view)
  • ability to attach one or two infant car seats

Side-by-Side Strollers

  • narrow width (30 inches or less) in order to fit easily through standard doorways

It may not be realistic to expect that you will find a double or twin stroller that has all the features you want. In order to find the best one to fit your needs, it is important to plan ahead and to decide which features you just cannot live without and which would be nice to have if the price is right.
